Minimally Invasive Surgery

Often referred to as ‘keyhole surgery’, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) involves performing surgery of the abdomen (laparoscopy), chest (thoracoscopy), and joints (arthroscopy) through small incisions.  Benefits of these techniques include smaller incisions, faster healing, improved visualization, faster return to function, and less pain for our four legged friends.  Surgery is done using a HD camera, a small telescope, a xenon light source and various specialized instruments.  The surgeons watch the surgical area on an HD monitor using the advantage of magnification and illumination allowing for improved visualization and more accurate surgical manipulation. 

Drs. Steinberg and Green completed their residencies at Upenn which is a leading institution regarding MIS.  One of the main reasons that animals don’t benefit from these procedures is due to the lack of knowledge on the subject by the general public.  Being the standard of care in human medicine, each animal should benefit from less operative pain and faster healing as well.  We always welcome questions on the subject and are happy to consult on any cases to see if the patient’s issue may be amenable to treatment by a less invasive procedure. 

Support of laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, and arthroscopic surgery is widespread in the veterinary literature.  There continue to be journal articles proving MIS to be more effective with less complications regarding routine spays, liver biopsies, gastropexies, and treatment of elbow dysplasia.  Please talk to your veterinarian or the staff at MVMC to see if MIS is right for your furry family member.

  •    Elbow dysplasia- fragmented medial coronoid removal
  •    Cranial cruciate ligament evaluation/ meniscal removal
