Antibiotic study: University of Minnesota

In August of 2021 Maine Veterinary Medical Center participated in an Antibiotic Use Point-Prevalence Survey being conducted by College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota as part of their Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship Initiative. These types of studies are structured to collect uniform data from multiple sites over a specific period of time. On a specific day in 2021, a trained facility coordinator collected retrospective data at Maine Veterinary Medical Center using existing health records. Data from all participating clinics was then compiled to summarize patient characteristics and presenting complaints, antibiotic prescribing rates, rates of diagnostic testing, and more.

The goal of this study is to establish a national estimate of antibiotic usage in general and referral small animal clinics and to describe how and why antibiotics are prescribed to small animal patients. This information will be used to identify antibiotic stewardship objectives, define interventions to improve prescribing, and track progress.

Monoclonal Antibody

Immunotherapy (augmented T-cell therapy for canine osteosarcoma with Elias Animal Health)

A unique treatment protocol that vaccinates the dog with its own cancer cells to produce an immune response. Personalized T cells are then safely obtained from the patient through apheresis and activated to produce a large population of killer T cells that are reinfused into the patient to kill the cancer.
